"There is no trick to acheive greatness + success in sport or life.......It starts with hard work + enthusiasm." - John Wooden, Former UCLA Basketball Coach MGHD APPROACH TO GOALTENDING
A Goaltender who has had Goalie Specific Training seems to have an edge both technically and competitively. Goalies that have had consistent goalie training have more confidence and are more likely to enjoy the game - which will produce better results. Without proper instruction, most young goaltenders will have developed dozens of pre-conditioned bad habits. Jamie McGuire is constantly modernizing his teaching methods because he believes that the goaltender position is always evolving. He has created a unique approach to teaching today's goaltenders that is based on breaking pre-conditioned habits by training the body and mind through repetition in order to develop sound muscle memory and drastically improve a goaltenders overall play. We do not teach or force feed a specific "style" at McGuire Goaltending. It is our job to provide tools for all situations that may occur in a game + to get the most out of each individual student based on their age, ability + level. Our intention at McGuire Goaltending is to simplify the position, not complicate it. Too many goalie coaches / schools today have attempted to create tiresome and complicated "systems" that are hard to understand and even harder to follow. Goaltending today is about positioning, crease movement + awareness, technique, reading the play + simplicity. A goaltenders job is to be in the right position in the crease before the puck is released by the shooter. This way a goaltender is able to have the puck hit their bodies and then be responsible to either smother it or properly steer the rebound. The best goaltenders in the world usually make the position look easy + effortless. "Big Saves", although sometimes necessary, are as a result of not being in the right position in the crease. Let's forget the 21 point systems, the 8 zones, and all the other complicated "systems" and get back to teaching goaltenders how to skate more effectively, how to be in the right position at the right time, how to perfect their stance, how to improve their goalie specific crease movements, how to communicate with the players on their team, how to properly play the puck + the other basic fundamentals of the position. Goalie Specific Power-Skating, Increasing Foot Speed, Proper Recovery Techniques + Puck Handling are emphasized in all areas of our programs in order to help goalies of all ages and levels increase their speed and agility, ensuring consistent + proper positioning. We welcome goalies of all ages and levels. (All Private / Semi-Private Lessons, Camps + Clinics will be held at Canlan Ice Sports at York University unless otherwise noted.)
MGHD Goaltending Program Includes:
1. Learn to “gap out” – close gap between yourself and the shooter 2. Pivot quicker and properly 3. C-cuts | T-push | Shuffle 4. Developing better foot speed 5. Rebound control | Steering 6. Proper butterfly techniques (slide, recovery push, hard drop, post integration) 7. Puck handling 8. Improving muscle memory 9. Improving overall reaction time 10. Improve verbal communication skills on the ice 11. Understanding the position 12. Proper stance + glove positioning 13. The mental aspect of goaltending - Learning to deal with adversity 14. Tracking the puck more efficiently 15. Playing angles 16. Proper Recovery Techniques 17. Improving Crease Awareness
The bottom line: McGuire Goaltending goalies only camps + clinics allow goalies to improve their skills through the repetition of proper fundamentals in a fun, up-tempo environment with encouragement from experienced hockey professionals.
"Do not try to be better than somebody else, but never stop trying to be the best you can be"
- John Wooden, Former UCLA Basketball Coach
